Utah opened '97-98 ranked #16 in in the preseason poll, and that was after Keith Van Horn had left for the NBA Draft. Rick Majerus' team climbed fast: an 18 game win streak to start the year, then a 25-3 finish.
Seeded #3 in the West Region, the Utes beat #14 San Francisco and #6 Arkansas to reach the Sweet 16. Andre Miller, Michael Doleac and Hanno Mottola — three future NBA players — pushed them past West Virginia by 3, then blew out #1 Arizona by 25 to make the Final Four.
One more upset followed, 65-59 over #1 North Carolina, and Utah was in the national championship game. Kentucky ended the run there, 78-69.
"We were so good primarily because we all cared about each other."
-Michael Doleac, Utah Utes
