Wade Houston's Volunteers came into the 1990-1991 season fresh off an NIT appearance. Sophomore Allan Houston carried the scoring load, putting up close to 24 points a night and landing on the All SEC First Team. He'd finish his college career as the school's all-time leading scorer.
The regular season went sideways anyway. Tennessee closed it at 9-20, and a 3-15 in conference record made the Vols the 10th seed in the SEC Tournament.
Ole Miss fell in the opening round. Then came the shocker: #18 Mississippi State was dismantled in round two, 87-70. A semifinal rout of Georgia left the 10th-seeded Vols one victory from an SEC Tournament title and an automatic NCAA berth.
#24 Alabama shut the door, 88-69.
