'03 Syracuse Legacy
Syracuse had just played in the NIT, so nobody expected a title run in 2002-2003. Then Carmelo Anthony showed up. The freshman averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds a game, and he had help: Gerry McNamara, Billy Edelin, Hakim Warrick and senior Kueth Duany.
Boeheim's 2-3 matchup zone swallowed opponents whole. The Orange went 24-5, shared the Big East West title and took a #3 seed in the East Region.
Manhattan and Oklahoma State fell before the Sweet 16, where Josh Pace came off the bench for 14 points to survive Auburn 79-78. Oklahoma had no answer for the zone in the Elite 8, and Syracuse was off to the 2003 Final Four.
T.J. Ford and Texas went down 95-84, putting the Orange in the national championship game for the third time in school history. Waiting there: Roy Williams, Kirk Hinrich, Nick Collison and #2 seed Kansas.
Anthony scored 20, McNamara stayed hot, and Syracuse clung to a three-point lead in the final seconds. Hinrich found Michael Lee in the corner for what looked like an open three to tie it. Warrick came out of the post and blocked it — first national championship, sealed.
