Few athletes are tied to a single photo the way Felipe Lopez is. When Sports Illustrated's 1994 College Basketball Preview landed on newsstands, the St. John's freshman became a household name overnight, at least for anyone who followed the sport casually.
A New York schoolboy legend, Lopez arrived on campus with comparisons calling him LeBron before LeBron. That famous cover only raised the volume of expectation.
"We knew all eyes were going to be on us after the Sports Illustrated cover," says Zendon Hamilton.
Lopez left St. John's as the 3rd leading scorer in program history and spent 4 seasons in the NBA before a knee injury ended his time in the league.
