Dwyane Wade's second season was no slump. Flash kept the high-wire moves from his rookie year and added a knockdown mid-range jumper plus a defensive instinct that made his first SLAM cover a foregone conclusion.
He entered the League with the '03 draft class, scrapping for attention against the Chosen One, an unknown, a college champ and plenty of proven collegians. Scouts knocked him as undersized for a two-guard yet too big to run the point. Measuring heart wasn't in the combine's toolkit — Wade would've topped that list easily.
Shaquille O'Neal's arrival didn't rattle him either. Wade ran the Heat like a fire keeper of old, and he finished that second campaign top ten in the NBA in both scoring and assists. Those scouts could've used a peek into the flames he was reading.
The '06 Finals explosion grew out of the previous season's embers, and it came not long after SLAM 87 hit. Wade fell seven times and got up eight. Clutch, unstoppable, Hall of Famer — the words started piling up.
SLAM 87 was the flashpoint. This youth tee carries the cover on the front.
