Call this Blake Griffin before Lob City officially opened. Chris Paul wasn't feeding him yet when SLAM 147 hit the stands — Baron Davis and Randy Foye were the ones lobbing him the ball. And oh, did Blake dunk on everyone.
After being picked number one overall in 2009, Griffin sat out his entire rookie season with an injury, which only cranked the hype higher. He'd been an athletic force at Oklahoma, and people had already seen flashes of what the NBA would get. Then his first NBA basket was a dunk, and the legend grew a little more.
From there he posterized nearly every big man in the league and made All-Star as a rookie.
The dunks buried the lede, though. Griffin was a real ballplayer, not just a freak athlete. He played and started every Clippers game that season and finished with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists per game on 50 percent shooting. Some grumbled when his name went on the ROY award, arguing he wasn't really a rookie. Those were All-Star numbers from an All-Star entertainer. The cover line of SLAM 147 was facts — everyone in the Clippers organization and around the NBA already called him the future of the League. All we did was write down what they said behind closed doors.
