The Knicks were pretty buns in the 2000s. Then Amar'e Stoudemire arrived in the first week of July 2010 free agency and summed up the whole thing in four words: "The Knicks are back."
Madison Square Garden had gone without a winning season since 2002 and without a playoff game since 2004; the building had been home to just three All-Stars across the entire decade. Stoudemire changed that in his first season in blue and orange, making the All-Star team, pushing the 'Bockers back into the postseason and steering them to a winning record.
New York caught the fever fast. Loud, too. Since SLAM has always been headquartered in the city, we felt the shift up close, and it was clear S.T.A.T. had earned a cover. Post-dunk snarl on, signature spectacles in tow, he wasn't just an All-Star who reached the playoffs and finished over .500 — he became the first Knick on a SLAM cover in more than a decade.
This youth version carries that front cover print, so a younger Knicks fan can wear a bit of the turnaround.
