Smaller than the giants around him, Isiah Thomas still ran the show. Laimbeer, Mahorn and Rodman brought the punishment at the rim; their point guard brought the plan.
Share the ball, score when it counted, smile for the cameras, keep his voice quiet in press scrums, kiss Magic Johnson on the way in. A nice little floor general. That's the version most people remember.
The real version played meaner than that. Zeke stayed on the gas and dared his teammates to hit harder, chasing every advantage and poking at any weakness he could find, all of it hidden behind those pearly whites. Mental warfare was the assignment.
Detroit cared nothing for the league's rulebook, so the Pistons played by their own set and collected back-to-back championships while they were at it.
For the NBA's 75th anniversary celebration, SLAM assembled the 75 Before '94 project. We launched this magazine in 1994 and missed plenty of brilliance before that, so the series honored stars who never got a cover.
Thomas has one now, and it sits on a SLAM Hardwood Classics crop cover tee in women's sizing.
