Doubt never has to run both ways.
Anyone busy doubting somebody else is missing something. There's a hole in their heart, and they try to fill it by dragging another person down to their own broken block, using every hateful word they've got to keep them stuck on that miserable street.
Self-belief has a say here. It can turn the doubter's two-way street into a dead end, then stack an Olympic-sized ramp on a gymnast-level trampoline at the end of it and let the doubted launch clean into the stars.
Isaiah Thomas did precisely that with the Boston Celtics. He rose over the doubters, the haters and the skeptics and landed somewhere his game will be remembered for good.
The "Mr. Irrelevant" label came from being the 60th and final pick in the 2011 draft. He wouldn't let it stick. A 5-9 point guard who backed himself enough to average nearly 30 points a game in the NBA.
Read that again.
At 5-9, Isaiah Thomas averaged nearly 30 points a game across a full NBA season.
Anything is possible.
SLAM 208 landed right after the King in the Fourth had sucker punched the whole League with off-the-bounce jumpers, photon-quick drives to the rim and clutch performances that defied belief. That season he was the Celtics' entire offense, and everything was built to let this spiritual giant flourish.
One line from I.T.'s cover story says plenty:
"My job is to make people eat their words," Thomas told SLAM.
Those doubters are feeling plenty full right now.
