Let's be honest: the Knicks were rough in the 2000s. Then Amar'e Stoudemire showed up in the first week of free agency in July 2010 and said four words that echoed around the league: "The Knicks are back."
Madison Square Garden had gone without a winning season since 2002, and no playoff game had been played there since 2004. Three All-Stars in a whole decade — that was the tally.
Stoudemire changed the math. He made the All-Star team in his first year in blue and orange, pushed the 'Bockers into the postseason and finished with a winning record.
What he promised at that presser held up.
New York got loud fast. Real loud, real quick.
SLAM has called New York home from the start, so we felt the city fall for the Knicks all over again. S.T.A.T. had clearly earned a cover. Post-dunk snarl on, signature spectacles in place, he didn't just collect the All-Star nod, reach the playoffs and finish above .500 — he became the first Knick on a SLAM cover in more than ten years.
New York was back, and Amar'e Stoudemire was a big reason why.
