The Bad Boys followed the baddest one of them all, and Isiah Thomas led that pack. He looked small next to Bill Laimbeer, Rick Mahorn and Dennis Rodman. His frame didn't match his teammates either, the guys who built their careers on handing out punishment at the rim.
Zeke was just the point guard, right? Sharing the sugar, scoring in the clutch. A huge smile. Astonishing dribbling. Miraculous passes. Soft words with the media. Pregame kisses with Magic Johnson. An inspirational floor general, right?
Make no mistake, though.
On the court, Isiah Thomas was a savage.
His foot stayed on the gas, urging those teammates toward vicious blows, hunting advantages at every turn, exploiting any weakness he found. Bloodthirsty fangs dripped red behind the famous pearly whites. Assists and late buckets weren't his real charge. Mental warfare was. He ran the floor like a general sending soldiers out to burn fields and leave no prisoners.
Detroit had their own rules and refused to play by anyone else's, the NBA's included. Pushed by the meanest of the Bad Boys, the Pistons took back-to-back titles at the height of their dominance.
SLAM's 75 Before '94 project came out during the NBA's 75th anniversary celebration. Our magazine was founded in 1994, which means we missed decades of brilliance. This project was our homage to all the stars who never got a chance to shine on a SLAM cover.
Isiah Thomas' 75 Before '94 cover is now available on a brand new SLAM Hardwood Classics cover tee.
