Before Amar'e Stoudemire landed in New York, the Knicks had been rough in the 2000s. Then came July 2010 and his four-word promise: "The Knicks are back."
Madison Square Garden hadn't seen a winning season since 2002. No playoff game had been played there since 2004, and the building had hosted just three All-Stars over the 2000s.
Stoudemire flipped the script in his first year in blue and orange. All-Star in season one, a return trip to the postseason, a winning record to finish it off.
He said it. Then he did it.
New York got loud about it, too. Real loud, real quick.
SLAM has been based in New York the whole time, so the city's renewed crush on the Knicks wasn't lost on us. S.T.A.T. had earned a cover, snarl after the dunk and those growing-signature spectacles and all. Beyond the All-Star nod, the playoff run and a finish over .500, he became the first Knick on a SLAM cover in more than a decade.
The Knicks really were back, and Amar'e Stoudemire was a big reason why.
