Issue 32 was the bridge. SLAM had grown tired of gen pop by 1999, and Allen Iverson was the ferryman who took readers from playing the game to building a new one.
Two earlier covers had already featured him — SLAM 9 and SLAM 18 — but one was an action photo and the other stayed tame. The difference with 32 came down to what showed on the front: jewelry, tattoos, an afro, an attitude, and a "throwback jersey" nobody had put on a national magazine before.
He was 23 at the time, skipping down the Yellow Brick Road in his own way and crossing the Wizard of Oz right out of his green suit. The quote from that cover story still holds up: "I dress the way I want to dress, I look the way I want to look."
Wear the front cover print on a long sleeve and skip the rules yourself.
