The SLAM ICONS series started in 2026, built around digital covers that honour storied players, teams and moments from basketball history. This one centres on Latrell Sprewell.
Fandom can be a strange business. Young athletes end up carrying the personal beliefs and old tragedies of strangers, often torn down by people who never knew their real story and never bothered to ask. One strike and you're out, at least in the eyes of those fans.
Sprewell had more than one strike, sure. What gets lost is that those strikes came out of pain nobody ever noticed or asked about.
Then New York gave him another shot. Spree, the high-flying and scarily competitive All-Star, was embraced, celebrated even. During the run to the '99 Finals the blue and orange faithful cheered him on with undying loyalty, drawn to him as he kept climbing toward the rim on those power-packed 10-foot punches. Below him sat an entire fanbase, reaching up for a piece of his particular brand of havoc.
He never seemed to notice. Past mistakes taught him to block out noise, good or bad. Most of the time he had Wu-Tang Clan in his Discman, getting ready to bring da ruckus. Which he always did.
