The Knicks were pretty buns through the 2000s, and that's putting it kindly. Amar'e Stoudemire arrived in the opening week of free agency in July 2010 and closed his introduction with four words: "The Knicks are back."
Before him, Madison Square Garden hadn't hosted a winning season since 2002. No playoff game there since 2004. Only three All-Stars had worn home colors across the 2000s.
All of that flipped. Stoudemire made the All-Star team in his debut season in blue and orange, got the 'Bockers into the postseason and steered them to a winning record.
Turned out he meant it.
New York buzzed loud, and fast.
SLAM's headquarters have always been in New York, so the city's renewed love for the Knicks was hard to miss. S.T.A.T. had earned a cover, no question. There he was with the post-dunk snarl and those signature spectacles: All-Star nod, postseason run, a finish over .500, and the first Knick on a SLAM cover in over a decade.
Amar'e Stoudemire deserves a lot of the credit for bringing the Knicks back.
