Before Amar’e Stoudemire showed up, the Knicks were rough. He signed in the first week of free agency in July 2010, and his intro presser wrapped on four words that did a lot of heavy lifting: “The Knicks are back.”
Hard to overstate how badly the Garden needed it. No winning season since 2002. No playoff game since 2004. Just three All-Stars across the whole 2000s.
Stoudemire changed the math. All-Star in his first year in blue and orange, the franchise back in the postseason, and a winning record to go with it. What he said at the podium held up.
New York got loud again. Real loud, real quick.
SLAM has called New York home from the start, so we felt the shift. S.T.A.T. had earned a cover. There he is, post-dunk snarl and those growing-signature spectacles in tow — not only an All-Star nod, a playoff run and a finish above .500, but the first Knick on a SLAM cover in more than a decade.
