SLAM's Legacy Collection goes back into the archives to pull out college basketball classics. Each retro pair gets made with the materials and details that honor the original designs, the same way we'd want it done. It was a labor of love, and the goal was an era specific keepsake for the most iconic styles in college basketball history.
'93 Wolverine Legacy
Michigan arrived with five freshman starters and a Final Four run in '92. They opened the '93 season as the #1 team in the country with a target squarely on their backs. The Fab Five were a year older, and anything short of another Final Four trip would count as a failure.
A 26-4 regular season kept the Wolverines no lower than #7 in in the polls. They took the #1 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament, then avoided a massive upset by squeaking past #9 seed UCLA, 86-84, to reach the Sweet 16. Wins over George Washington and Temple sent Michigan back to the Final Four and into a National Championship matchup.
First up was fellow #1 seed Kentucky and Jamal Mashburn. The game went to overtime, and Michigan prevailed 81-78 to punch a ticket to a second straight National Championship game.
Michigan fell to Dean Smith and North Carolina, 77-71, in one of the most memorable title games ever played. No championship came out of it, yet the Fab Five left their mark as the most influential team in college basketball history across their two years in Ann Arbor.
