Penny Hardaway arrived at Memphis as the most sought-after recruit in the country, and the 1991-92 Tigers gave him plenty to work with. Larry Finch's team finished the regular season 23-11, grabbed a #6 seed in the Midwest, then knocked off Pepperdine, Arkansas and Georgia Tech. Cincinnati ended the run in the Elite 8.
Memphis won the Penny sweepstakes partly because of what the program had built in the 1980s. Arkansas made its pitch too. It wasn't enough.
“I fell in love with that (Memphis, 1984-85) team that went to the Final Four against Villanova and from that point on, I was already sold,” Hardaway said.
