'92 Tiger Legacy
Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway landed at Memphis State for the 1991-92 season as the nation's top recruit. After sitting out a year as a Prop 48, he took the Tigers and the country by storm, averaging over 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists per game while the team rolled to a 23-11 regular season record.
That mark earned a #6 seed in the Midwest Region. A 10 point win over #11 Pepperdine came first, then a date with #3 Arkansas, a school Penny had considered coming out of high school.
Trailing by 8 at the half, Memphis State outscored the Razorbacks by 10 after the break and squeaked out a 2 point win to reach the Sweet 16.
An OT thriller against #7 Georgia Tech left the Tigers one win from their first Final Four since 1985. Cincinnati had other plans and ended the run in the Elite 8.
Hardaway remains a Memphis legend.
"I love him. The pressure was great to keep Penny here in Memphis. We need the attraction. But he needed us more." — Larry Finch, head coach
