Juan Dixon, Steve Blake and Lonny Baxter gave Gary Williams a roster good enough to open the 2001-2002 season at #2 in in the AP Poll. Maryland answered that ranking with a 25-3 regular season and a 15-1 in mark in a stacked ACC.
That ACC run earned the Terps the #1 seed in the East Region. Kentucky, UConn, Kansas and Indiana all fell during the tournament, and Maryland walked away with the school's first National Championship.
Four of Maryland's top five players eventually reached the NBA. None mattered more than the skinny guard out of Baltimore.
"Nobody ever did what he did at Maryland. There was no MOP of the Final Four except for Juan, there was no ACC Player of the Year very often, he was the program's all-time leading scorer, made two Final Fours, that type of thing. When they talk about all the great players at Maryland, I think Juan has to be at the top of the list."
-Gary Williams, Head Coach
