A Sweet 16 trip the year before left Lefty Driesell's Terrapins wanting more in 1985-86. Maryland sat at #19 in in the AP Poll and needed a win over #1 UNC to keep its late NCAA Tournament hopes alive.
The regular season wrapped at 15-12, and Maryland took an invite as the #5 seed in the West.
Pepperdine went down in the first round. Next came #4 seed UNLV, ranked 11th, and the Terrapins' run ended there.
Len Bias was the bright spot all season, averaging 23 points and 7 rebounds and earning ACC Player of the Year plus Consensus 1st Team All American.
"He modeled his post-up game after Bernard King who had the ability to- with a defender on his back- turn in the post and shoot over the top. Easily. Once Lenny had that perfected, everybody was at his mercy."
-Keith Gatlin, PG Maryland
