Tom Crean's 2002-2003 Marquette Golden Eagles opened the year in the Top 20 and had every reason to like their chances. Then came back-to-back losses to East Carolina and Dayton, and the Golden Eagles looked nothing like a tournament team.
They regrouped. A 15-1 in run over the last 16 regular season games earned Marquette a #3 seed in the Midwest Region. A tight win over Holy Cross, then an 8 point victory against Mizzou, put them in the Sweet 16. Another close one against #2 seed Pitt set up a Regional Final with #1 Kentucky.
Kentucky carried 5 NBA players on that roster and came in at 32-3. Marquette had Dwyane Wade. He finished with 29 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists, and the Golden Eagles were off to their first Final Four since 1977. One of the greatest individual performances in NCAA Tournament history, and the start of Wade's rise to global stardom.
"I was going to give it my all. I told the guys at halftime, 'Leave your hearts on the court.' Tonight I just took whatever they gave me and it worked for us."
-Dwyane Wade, Marquette
