Denny Crum's Cardinals started the 1979-1980 season in the AP Poll's Top 10, and Darrell Griffith and Derek Smith made sure they stayed there. Louisville closed the regular season at 28-3, sweeping the Metro Conference at a perfect 12-0.
A #2 seed in the Midwest Region followed. Kansas State and Texas A&M were dispatched, which set up a meeting with #1 seed LSU — the Tigers lost by 20 as U of L punched its Final Four ticket. Iowa fell 80-72 in the semis, and then came UCLA in the national championship game. Griffith, a Louisville native, scored 23 and the Cardinals won 59-54 for the school's first national title.
"It means more to me probably than the other guys just because I was from Louisville and seen how we came so close so many times and never able to get over the hump. And to be able to get over the hump, it means a lot." — Darrell Griffith
