Denny Crum's Cardinals opened the 1979-1980 campaign inside the AP Top 10. Darrell Griffith and Derek Smith carried that group to a 28-3 regular-season mark, and they ran the Metro Conference slate clean at 12-0.
Seeded #2 in the Midwest, Louisville beat Kansas State, then Texas A&M, which set up a meeting with top-seeded LSU. The Tigers didn't stay close — U of L won by 20 and punched a Final Four ticket.
Iowa fell 80-72 in the semis. That left UCLA, and Griffith, the hometown kid, dropped 23 in a 59-54 win that delivered the school's first National Championship.
