One side of Kevin Garnett rarely made it into the public's view. Fair enough. The bugged-out eyes were hard to miss, so were the pulsing neck veins and the gallons of sweat running off his head. And good luck ignoring the trash talk, delivered with lines so creative that Billy Shakespeare would have been taking notes.
All of it buried the part that never got enough airtime: KG's heart.
Not heart in the hopeless romantic sense, pining after unrequited love. Heart as desire, passion, competitiveness. Heart as ob-fu*&ing-session.
He N-E-E-D-E-D to win a chip. You thought his body was restless on the court? His soul was so uneasy without a ring that it flew figure eights around his nonstop feet at 1,000 miles per hour.
The Celtics picked up KG in July of 2007. He starred on the cover of SLAM 113 that December, then hoisted the Larry O'Brien Trophy in June of '08.
The heart came out on the parquet floor while he celebrated his first NBA title. He famously yelled "ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!"
That one aspect of Garnett couldn't be looked over anymore. It became the thing Kevin Garnett was most known for: heart.
