Rick Pitino's Kentucky Wildcats opened the 1994-1995 season stacked with talent. Tony Delk, Rodrick Rhodes, Mark Pope and Walter McCarty all came back, and HS All-American Antoine Walker joined them. Jeff Sheppard and freshman Scott Padgett filled out a roster that would eventually send 7 players from the '95 team to the NBA. Top-5 in the preseason AP Poll felt about right, and Big Blue Nation was already talking Final Four.
A 25-4 record brought both the SEC regular season title and the SEC Tournament Championship, plus the #1 seed in the Southeast Region. Three blowouts followed: #16 Mount St. Mary's, #9 Tulane, #5 Arizona State. That left Kentucky one game short of the Final Four.
The run stopped there. #2 seed North Carolina took the meeting, 74-61. Most of that '95 core came back the next year, though, and became part of one of the greatest teams in college basketball history.
