The 2002 Final Four run was still fresh in Lawrence when Kansas opened the 2003 season ranked #2 in in the AP Poll, with Kirk Hinrich and Nick Collison back on the roster.
A 3-3 start looked shaky. Then came 10 straight wins, another Big 12 regular season championship, and a 24-6 record that handed the Jayhawks the #2 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament.
Utah State got past them in a tight one, Arizona State got run out of the building, and the Sweet 16 arrived. Wins over #3 seed Duke and #1 seed Arizona followed, and back to the Final Four went Kansas.
What happened next stands as one of the most dominant Final Four performances in NCAA Tournament history — Kansas 94, Marquette 61. Dwyane Wade had no answer for Hinrich, Collison and the Jayhawks that day.
"Some people could say we reached the pinnacle of our game today. I hope there's still something left in us." — Roy Williams
Syracuse broke their hearts two nights later, 81-78, in the national championship game.
