Perfection doesn't happen by accident.
Indiana's 1976 story really starts in '75. The Hoosiers were rolling until a late-season broken arm sidelined Scott May, and with him went the national championship dream. One loss. That was it. It lit the fuse for what came next.
By '76 May was back, joined by Quinn Buckner, Kent Benson, Tom Abernethy and Bobby Wilkerson. Redemption wasn't the goal anymore — perfection was.
Bob Knight's Hoosiers opened the season ranked No. 1 and never moved. Wire-to-wire. No slips. Just wins.
In the NCAA Tournament, IU blew past St. John's, Alabama and Marquette to reach the Final Four, handled the UCLA Bruins, then beat conference rival Michigan to close out the title run.
86–68. Season over.
Undefeated. Untouchable. Immortal.
Indiana finished 32–0, took the program's third national title, and owns the last perfect season in college basketball history.
"We were special because of one man, Bob Knight. For all of us, the biggest part was seeing the smile on Coach Knight's face." — Quinn Buckner
