Perfection doesn't happen by accident.
To find the start of Indiana's 1976 season, go back to '75. The Hoosiers looked unstoppable until Scott May broke his arm late in the year, taking the national title hopes with him. One loss. That was it. What came next started right there.
With May back in '76 alongside Quinn Buckner, Kent Benson, Tom Abernethy and Bobby Wilkerson, redemption turned into something bigger: perfection.
Legendary head coach Bob Knight had his team at No. 1 from day one, and the Hoosiers never left. Wire-to-wire. No slips. No doubts. Just wins.
IU ran through St. John's, Alabama and Marquette in the NCAA Tournament to reach the Final Four, beat UCLA, then closed out the title run against conference rival Michigan.
86–68. Season over.
Undefeated. Untouchable. Immortal.
The final tally was 32–0, the program's third national championship and the last perfect season in the history of college basketball.
“We were special because of one man, Bob Knight. For all of us, the biggest part was seeing the smile on Coach Knight’s face.” -Quinn Buckner
