The 1995-96 Georgetown squad came in with a Top 5 preseason ranking and high hopes. Much of that buzz circled around Allen Iverson, the sophomore guard who had already made a name for himself. John Thompson still had plenty of help around him, with Jerome Williams, Victor Paige, Othella Harrington and Jahidi White all on the roster.
Conference play closed at 13-5, good for the Big 7 division of the BIG EAST. The Hoyas then reached the BIG EAST Tournament Championship Game against UConn, a matchup that turned into an instant classic.
In the NCAA Tournament, Georgetown carried the 3 seed in the South Region. Mississippi Valley State and New Mexico fell first, sending the team to the Sweet 16. A 3 point halftime hole against Texas Tech got erased, and the Hoyas won 98-90 to reach the Elite 8.
The run ended against #1 UMass, closing out the college career of one of the sport's best. Iverson averaged 25-4-5 that season, earned consensus 1st Team All-American honors and was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of The Year for the second time.
