Billy Donovan's second season in charge at Florida came with a very young, very inexperienced roster. What he did have for 1997-1998 was Jason Williams, a superstar in the making. The 6'1 guard from Belle, West Virginia had sat out the prior year after transferring from Marshall, and he wasted little time once he was cleared to play.
With Williams on the floor the Gators went 12-8, and he led the team in scoring and assists. By the time he left the program, J-Will ranked among the SEC's best in seven statistical categories.
Florida closed out the year at 14-14 and took an NIT bid, falling to Georgetown in the first round. The season didn't unfold the way Donovan wanted, yet the foundation was forming. That foundation carried the Gators through back to back deep NCAA Tournament runs and a National Championship game appearance in 2000.
