Nobody ranked Billy Donovan's 2005-2006 Florida Gators going into the season. The Gators then stormed college basketball behind a very young core of rising stars, winning their first 17 games with victories over #19 Wake Forest and #16 Syracuse along the way.
A late-season stumble didn't stop Joakim Noah, Al Horford and Corey Brewer. They worked through the SEC Tournament and took the final over South Carolina, 49-47.
An SEC Tournament Championship and a 27-6 overall record earned Florida the #3 seed in the Minneapolis Region of the NCAA Tournament. South Alabama and Milwaukee fell by 26 and 22 points, respectively, sending the Gators into the Sweet 16.
The regional semifinal against #7 Georgetown was Florida's toughest test. A defensive battle from the opening tip, UF squeaked by 57-53. Nobody else got within single digits.
From there: a 13 point win over #1 seed Villanova, a 15 point win over #11 seed George Mason, and a dominating 16 point win over #2 seed UCLA. That delivered Florida's first basketball national championship.
"It was a very unselfish group, great length. We could do a lot of different things. It was an unbelievable year." -Billy Donovan
