Billy Donovan's 2005-2006 Florida Gators started the year unranked and overlooked. Then a very young core of rising stars took college basketball by storm, reeling off 17 straight wins that included victories over #19 Wake Forest and #16 Syracuse.
A late-season sputter didn't derail Joakim Noah, Al Horford and Corey Brewer. The Gators found their way through the SEC Tournament and beat South Carolina in the final, 49-47.
With an SEC Tournament Championship and a 27-6 overall record, Florida landed the #3 seed in the Minneapolis Region of the NCAA Tournament. Wins over South Alabama and Milwaukee by 26 and 22 points, respectively, carried them into the Sweet 16.
Florida's toughest test came in the regional semifinal against #7 Georgetown. It was a defensive battle from the opening tip, and UF squeaked by 57-53. No other team would get within single digits of the Gators.
A 13 point win over #1 seed Villanova, a 15 point win over #11 seed George Mason and a dominating 16 point win over #2 seed UCLA gave Florida their first basketball national championship.
"It was a very unselfish group, great length. We could do a lot of different things. It was an unbelievable year." -Billy Donovan
