Chicago got the whole tasting menu. Derrick Rose going number one overall to his hometown team played the hors d'oeuvres, the '09 ROY award was the appetizer, an All-Star spot as a sophomore covered the salad, and gold at the 2010 FIBA World Cup arrived as the main course. Then came dessert — youngest MVP in League history, still the record holder in 2026.
December 2010 is when SLAM 143 hit the shelves. That MVP award wouldn't be made official until May of 2011, though the smell of the dessert had drifted across the League well before then. A few simple questions went to the media from Rose in October of 2010:
“The way I look at it, why can’t I be the MVP of the League? Why can’t I be the best player in the League? I don’t see why not. I work hard, I dedicate myself to the game and sacrifice a lot of things at a young age, and I know, if I continue to do good what I can get out of it.”
Three Michelin stars, raised in Chicago, lighting up the Madhouse on Madison for the whole Chi to see.
