Cincinnati began the 1995-1996 season ranked #21 in in the preseason poll and needed only a 12-game win streak to climb to #3. Bob Huggins's Bearcats took both the CUSA regular-season and tournament titles, which earned them the #2 seed in the Southeast Region.
Sophomore forward Danny Fortson led the way past UNC Greensboro and Temple into the Sweet 16. A win over #3 seed Georgia Tech left the Bearcats one game short of the Final Four — Mississippi State stopped them there, 73-63.
Fortson was named Conference USA Player of the Year after putting up 20 points and close to 10 rebounds a night, and he went on to rank among the best players in Cincinnati basketball history. Huggins on his star: "Danny wasn't much of a jumper but he had the heart and an incredible desire to be great. The things Danny did to prepare himself were better than anyone I ever had. He ended up a great college player and a great pro because he put the time in."
