Roger Reid's BYU Cougars went into the 1990-91 season with high hopes, fresh off an NCAA Tournament appearance the year before. They also had a new face on the roster. A 7 foot 6 inch new face. Shawn Bradley arrived as a McDonald's All-American and one of the most decorated high school players in Utah state history. He didn't disappoint.
Bradley topped the Cougars in points, rebounds and blocks, and the team sat at 17-12 going into the WAC Tournament. At that point BYU looked like it was on the wrong side of the bubble. Wins over Colorado State, Hawaii and #8 Utah changed everything, delivering the conference championship and a ticket to the Big Dance.
BYU landed the #10 seed in the West Region, beat #7 Virginia, then fell to #2 seed Arizona. Bradley wouldn't play for the Cougars again. After a two-year mission he declared for the 1993 NBA Draft and went #2 overall.
