The Knicks were pretty buns through the 2000s. Then came the first week of free agency in July 2010, when Amar’e Stoudemire arrived and summed the whole thing up in four words: “The Knicks are back.”
Madison Square Garden hadn’t seen a winning season since 2002, hadn’t hosted a playoff game since 2004, and had been home to only three All-Stars during the 2000s.
Stoudemire flipped all of it. An All-Star in his first season wearing blue and orange, a postseason return for the ‘Bockers, a winning record on the board. His prediction turned out true.
New York buzzed again, and it happened fast.
SLAM’s offices have sat in New York forever, so we watched the city fall for the Knicks a second time. S.T.A.T. had earned the front. Post-dunk snarl, the spectacles turning into a signature — he took the All-Star nod, reached the playoffs, finished over .500, and became the first Knick on a SLAM cover in over a decade.
