'96 Hoya Legacy
Georgetown opened the 1995-1996 season ranked in the Top 5, with big expectations riding on the return of sophomore sensation Allen Iverson. John Thompson's Hoyas were never a one-man show, though — Jerome Williams, Victor Paige, Othella Harrington and Jahidi White rounded out a deep roster.
A 13-5 conference record earned Georgetown the Big 7 division of the BIG EAST and a trip to the BIG EAST Tournament Championship Game against UConn, which turned into an instant classic.
In the NCAA Tournament the Hoyas came in as the 3 seed in the South Region and rolled past Mississippi Valley State and New Mexico to reach the Sweet 16. Down by 3 at the half against Texas Tech, they came back to win 98-90 and move on to the Elite 8.
A loss to #1 UMass closed out the college career of one of the game's best. Iverson averaged 25-4-5 that season, was a consensus 1st Team All-American and a two-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year.
