Issue 32 is the one that pushed SLAM past gen pop for good. Consider it the official bridge from playing the game to building a whole new one, and the guy holding the handrail was Allen Iverson.
He'd already graced SLAM 9 and SLAM 18. Those covers were an action shot and something fairly tame, honestly.
Then came SLAM 32. Jewelry, tattoos, an afro, an attitude and a garment the magazine called a throwback jersey, all stacked on one national cover. It broke down doors to individual expression whose keys had been lost for decades.
Kansas had nothing to do with it, Jack. Neither did Oz. A 23-year-old with a 'fro skipped down the Yellow Brick Road and crossed the Wizard all the way out of his green suit.
Rules got left behind. Bubba Chuck, as Iverson's friends call him, used that cover to confirm something the nation keeps burying under conformity: it's cool to be you. He was just being him, decades before anyone would've called Iverson HIM.
"I dress the way I want to dress, I look the way I want to look," he says in the cover story.
Facts. Straight like that.
One image and SLAM hit the gas. We agreed with Bubba Chuck, and from then on we wanted everyone on our covers and inside our pages to be true to themselves. #3 is where our voice came from.
The new game was set. Everyone else eventually tried to be like SLAM; we kept being different.
