Pantaloncini retrò Kentucky Wildcats 1977-1978 edizione away

Joe B. Hall brought back a loaded roster from his '77 SEC Championship squad, and the 1978 Wildcats opened the year at #2 in in the preseason AP Poll. Fourteen straight wins to start. They closed at 25-2 and took the SEC crown again.

Senior Jack Givens carried 18 points a game, with four teammates also scoring in double figures. Kentucky sat at #1 in in the country for 13 of the 15 possible weeks that season. Getting to the Final Four took three ranked scalps: #13 Florida State, then #19 Miami OH, then a narrow escape against #4 Michigan State in the regional final.

St. Louis brought no relief. Arkansas and Sidney Moncrief pushed them to the limit before the Cats took it 64-59, setting up a title game with #7 Duke.

That Monday night, Jack "Goose" Givens put on a show college basketball would never forget! His 41 point, 8 rebound performance led Kentucky over the Blue Devils 94-88 giving the school it's 5th National Championship. "We won it for the people of Kentucky." -Jack Givens
