Six games plus one wheelchair equals history. That's the story behind this cover.
Boston's Big 3 grabbed their sixteenth championship with those ingredients. Kevin Garnett owned the glass, Ray Allen couldn't miss from three, and Paul Pierce — the '08 Finals MVP — did it all.
Pierce twisted his knee badly in Game 1 of the Finals and had to be carted off with 6:49 left in the third quarter. He thought he heard a pop when he went down. But this is a man who survived being stabbed eleven times, so one twisted knee wasn't going to keep him out of the Finals. Back he came with 5:04 remaining in the third. A few minutes later, bang, three-ball from the right wing. Next possession, bang, another one from the same spot. Yet another instant classic in Beantown, and the lifelong Celtic had finally stamped his name into Boston basketball's history books.
More iconic movement followed Pierce through the last stage of the postseason, enough to lead the Cs in scoring and take 2008 Finals MVP.
The trophy he's holding on the cover of SLAM 121 answered every question that plagued Boston. Can the Big 3 play together? Who is this unknown point guard? They almost lost to Atlanta, so how are they gonna win everything? So many more.
The simple response? Paul Pierce is really The Truth.
