Perfection doesn't happen by accident.
Indiana's 1976 season really begins in '75. The Hoosiers rolled along untouched until a late-season broken arm took Scott May out of the lineup, and the national title chase went with him. One loss. That was all it took. It also set the fuse for what followed.
By '76 May was back, joined by Quinn Buckner, Kent Benson, Tom Abernethy and Bobby Wilkerson. Redemption was the goal. Perfection was the result.
Bob Knight had the Hoosiers at No. 1 from the opening poll and they never budged. Wire-to-wire, no slips, no doubts, just wins.
The NCAA Tournament brought St. John's, Alabama and Marquette, all brushed aside on the way to the Final Four. UCLA went next. Then came conference rival Michigan in the final.
86–68. Season over.
Undefeated. Untouchable. Immortal.
Indiana closed at 32–0 with the program's third national title and the last perfect season college basketball has seen.
“We were special because of one man, Bob Knight. For all of us, the biggest part was seeing the smile on Coach Knight’s face.” -Quinn Buckner
