Kevin Garnett always had one side the public skipped past. Fair enough. Those bugged-out eyes were hard to miss, and so were the pulsing neck veins and the gallons of sweat pouring off his head. His trash talk was impossible to ignore too, with poetics creative enough that Billy Shakespeare would've been taking notes.
Beneath all of it sat the real thing, the one that doesn't get talked about enough: KG's heart.
Not heart like some hopeless romantic pining after unrequited love.
Heart like desire.
Heart like passion.
Heart like competitiveness.
Heart like ob-fu*&ing-session.
He N-E-E-D-E-D to win a chip. You thought his body was restless on the court? His soul was so uneasy without a ring that it was flying figure eights around his nonstop feet at 1,000 miles per hour.
The Celtics acquired KG in July of 2007, he starred on the cover of SLAM 113 in December of '07, and he hoisted the Larry O'Brien Trophy in June of '08.
That heart showed up on the parquet floor as he celebrated his first NBA title. "ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!" he famously yelled.
After that, nobody could look over that aspect of Garnett. It became the thing people know him for most.
