Menge:
Kevin Garnett's game had a side most people never noticed. Easy to see why. The wide eyes, the veins standing up in his neck, the sweat running off him in sheets. And you couldn't miss the talking either, trash so inventive that Shakespeare would've been scribbling it down.
What got buried under all that noise was the thing that mattered most. KG's heart.
Not the hopeless-romantic kind, pining over somebody who never called back.
Heart as desire.
Heart as passion.
Heart as pure competition.
Heart as ob-fu*&ing-session.
He N-E-E-D-E-D his way to a chip. You think his body was restless on the court? Without a ring his soul was so uneasy it was carving figure eights around those nonstop feet at 1,000 miles per hour.
Boston traded for KG in July of 2007, he landed the cover of SLAM 113 that December, and by June of '08 he was holding up the Larry O'Brien Trophy.
Then the heart spilled out on the parquet floor while he celebrated his first NBA title. "ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!" he yelled, and everyone heard it.
Nobody could overlook that side of Garnett after it. It turned into the thing he's known for most.
