There was a stretch in the mid-80s when Bernard King simply couldn't be stopped, and this cover tee honours the Brooklyn-born scorer who lit up the Knicks for three brilliant but brief seasons. The SLAM 75 Before '94 project ran during the NBA's 75th anniversary celebration, and it came together as an homage to the stars who never got a cover of our magazine — which, founded in 1994, missed plenty of greatness along the way.
King's numbers tell the story. From 1982 to 1985, the Brooklyn native was a machine, averaging 22 points per game in his first season, then 26 in his second, and a league-best 33 points a game in that final one.
Mid-range all day long. Simple, really. A few dribbles from around 18 feet and the net would sing, because King was too strong to be pushed off his sweet spots and too big for wing defenders to contest properly. The points piled up until he led the NBA in scoring during the '84-'85 season and also led in field goals made per game.
Consider the era. Fewer possessions and a slower game in the mid-80s made a scoring explosion far less likely, which makes his rampages even more impressive. On Christmas Day in 1984 he dropped 60 on the Nets, then put 55 on them less than two months later. Earlier in 1984 came back-to-back 50-point games on consecutive days. A King from the County of Kings, doing crazy stuff and earning his place in Knicks lore.
Injuries stole more history-defining performances from him. He still proved enough. It was King's court.
