Menge:
Five freshman starters took Michigan to the Final Four in '92. A year later the Fab Five were back, ranked #1 in the country, and anything short of another Final Four trip counted as a letdown.
Their regular season ended at 26-4, and the Wolverines never dropped below #7 in in the polls. As the West Region's #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, they survived a scare against #9 UCLA, 86-84, to reach the Sweet 16. Wins over George Washington and Temple sent Michigan to another Final Four.
Kentucky and Jamal Mashburn stood in the way next. Overtime. Michigan won 81-78 and booked a second straight National Championship game.
Dean Smith and North Carolina took that final, 77-71, in one of the most memorable title games ever played. No ring for the Fab Five, yet those two years in Ann Arbor made them the most influential team in college basketball history.
"We were unique and genuine and we wanted to express that. We didn't want someone else to define who we were." -Jimmy King
