Menge:
Hype followed Memphis into 2007-2008, and a #3 national ranking came with it. Derrick Rose was the freshman drawing the attention, though John Calipari's roster held plenty of NBA talent, including 6-7 forward Chris Douglas-Roberts, who paced the team at 18 ppg.
Twenty-six straight wins opened the year, with #24 USC, #5 Georgetown and #17 Arizona among the scalps. Memphis sat at #1 in in the AP Poll for 5 weeks of the regular season and rolled into the NCAA Tournament at 33-1, good for a #1 seed in the South.
Mississippi State, Michigan State, Texas and UCLA all fell before the championship game against Kansas.
